Need Help W/ Desktop Screen

WHEN I BOOT UP MY LAPTOP ALL THE SCREENS LOOK O.K. UNTIL THE DESKTOP APEARS. WHEN THE DESKTOP APEARS, IT HAS A BLACK BORDER AROUND IT . I HAVE CHANGED THE DISPLAY SETTING AND NOTHING HAS WORKED CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

Does your laptop have physical controls to adjust your screen? I have a desktop and my monitor has this row of buttons and nobs and such that I can make adjustments with... wondering if you have something similar on yours.

Also, right click on your desktop> properties> 'settings' tab> 'advanced' button. I don't know what kind of display adapter you have... I have an ATI All-in-wonder and in this spot I just directed you to I have a 'displays' tab and when I click on the word 'monitor' (vs TV or FPD) I get another options window where I can make further adjustments (similar to the manual ones on my monitor)... don't know if you have anything similar or not but thought I direct you there just in case.
