Need advice!

I have just re-installed windows XP because I had let it get into a bad state and i could not be botherd searching for all the files left behind by all those bloody applications!
This time I want to keep things in order. Does anybody know of a program, that is free, that will monitor applications and keep track on what mess they are leaving behind on my hard drive.
