need advice on virtual memory size..

hi boys and girls,

i have 512 mb of ram. right now, i have my virtual memory set at 768mb. is 768mb an optimal virtual memory size for a 512mb system running winxp pro?

Default setting for the pagefile is RAM x 1.5. With 512 MB RAM I doubt you'll need anything like that. Set it to 256 and see how it goes, 100 would probably be sufficient (provided you're not into bigtime graphics or CAD).

Found this a couple of weeks ago on a BB somewhere and been running without swap for two weeks now with no problems .. XP runs like a dream ..

"For all of you with 512 MB RAM or more, here's my advice.. get rid of that swap file! You will be surprised that Windows XP will run fine without it once you have the RAM available.

If you do not feel comfortable with going without a swap file, then set it to a minimum of 50 MB. To do this, Right-click on the My Computer Icon on your desktop, then select Properties. Click Advanced, then Settings, Then Advanced.

In the section describing virtual memory, click the CHANGE button, then select NO PAGING FILE if you want no swap file.. or CUSTOM SIZE if you want to start at 50 MB.

This will not only improve system performance, but you will be amazed as to how fast your system will run."

Same situation, 512meg ram and it too was at 768.
Resized page file to min and max 100 meg, made it permanant, and haven't had any problems. I have burned cds, and ran a few programs at the same time and always had 200 meg ram available.
I'm no expert but from what I have read with 512 meg ram you really don't need a page file except that some programs need them ie Speedisk.
