My new memory.

Hi, I just got my new memory today. I already have 1gig so this is my second. It is the same TWINX model as my two other ones… but when I boot with them installed my two S-ATA hard drives cannot be detected. I took the two new sticks out about 3 times and reinserted them – booted up in between them with and with out them installed and my hard drives were back while they weren’t installed. When I boot it says I have 2048 memory in the check. Oh, and sometimes with the new memory installed it will detect my HD’s at first and get to the Windows XP log-on screen, restart after about 5 seconds and my HD’s are gone at boot yet again!

- thank you for any help on this.

possibly defective sticks, i'd send them back for new ones.

or try 1 stick at a time and try to narrow down the bad stick.
try running memtest86 and see if you get memory errors with the new ram

You say "two other ones" and you "already have one gig" so I wonder if you are saying you already have two 512 sticks that make up 1 gig.

Then you are trying to add two new 512 MB sticks so you have 2 gig.

Some boards have problems trying to run all four slots so what board are we discussing?

ASUS P4C800 Deluxe ... http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socket478/p4c800-d/overview.htm

I'll try running the new ones in the A slots and take my olders out.

Well, i bought a different model of memory... I have "TWINX1024-3200C2PT" and I got just the normal "TWINX1024-3200C2".:(

But shouldn't it still be running right? Can you have two different type of memory in your system??

no seek, usually for dual ram to work or for a board with dual ram all sticks need to be made equal.

That's not true.

Depending on your meaning:

1) Many boards will allow you to run 2 slots in dual channel and address another slot(s) independently.

2) If you just mean different makes of memory, a dual channel rig will default to the speed of the slowest stick.

More cowbell!

Thanks for all the replies guys... I think it may be my power supply. My hard drive was clicking like it would if it were a goner through all of this but i've heard this can happen with lower power to the HD. Also I may have bumped the S-ATA cables and created a bad connection (they are cheap generics anyway). I just happened to have ordered some new cables and a 450w box about 2 days ago so I'm quite happy about that.

And, I took that memory back because I don't even want it around me again. :crosseyed:

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
