as with most people i have a rtl8139 NIC but it won't recognise in windows XP, if I re-install xp, i.e. another upgrade to copy over the old one, will this fix the error or just cock up my PC

if you know of anyone else who hads had a problem installing their RTL8139 NIC and gets the erroro cannot complete the data is invalid please reply and tell me thanks

This will not help you much but I have a Realtek 8139 which XP detected & installed when I installed the OS. I will have a look & find out which drivers are installed etc. & get back to you.

Sorry I haven't got back to you sooner. Checked my driver file in device manager and it says:-
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\RTL8139.sys

If this is the driver it has loaded & the card isn't working then I would suspect your card may be duff.
