My friend got that virus, where u accept a file from a friend.

Well, I ran AVG, Defender, Spybot and got nothing fixed.

Is there a fix for this, besides reformatting?

Did you accept this file from them?

If so post a hijack this log.

No I didn't, they want me to fix it.

AVG is installed, so installing nod is not a good idea, might have to uninstall and such..

There is no known fix for it?

which virus is it?... mm.. maybe u can run an online scanner?

I thought there was only one new virus you can get from msn these days,

i guess not...

next time i have her computer, which probably will be tommorow, i give a hijack log.

mm... i think there are a few that spread that way....

remove AVg and install nod32/kaspersky.

AVG is not and has never been effective against viruses/trojans, despite what people will try and claim to delude themselves into thinking they are safe by using it.

I had nod32 installed awhile back, but I dunno I just went back to AVG.

I was told nod was better, yet still went back. Maybe I will change as well as my friend. (oh yea, not free)

I will also do a hijack log.

After testing both for months I feel Kaspersky 7 is better then NOD32.

Is Kaspersky 7 free?

And just out of curiosity, before I get her computer. I ran a hijack on mine.

What is a normal computer with no problems or anything look like. Is mine alright?

I've dumped AVG long ago and went with avast! for my 'newbie' friend's machines.
If you stick with AVG, MAKE SURE YOU DO YOUR SCAN IN SAFE MODE, this applies for Spybot S&D as well. I can't count how many time's I've gotten results in safemode vs normal mode.

If you don't know what Snag It is check these.

O2 - BHO: SnagIt Toolbar Loader - {00C6482D-C502-44C8-8409-FCE54AD9C208} - C:\Program Files\SnagIt 8\SnagItBHO.dll

O3 - Toolbar: SnagIt - {8FF5E183-ABDE-46EB-B09E-D2AAB95CABE3} - C:\Program Files\SnagIt 8\SnagItIEAddin.dll

Check these.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime

Also

How to disable dumprep.exe: if you want to.

  1. Right click on “My Computer,” choose “Properties” from that menu.
  2. Click on “Advanced tab,”
  3. Click the “Error Reporting” button.
  4. Check the “Disable error reporting” box. You may choose to uncheck the the box below it, “But notify me when an error occurs,” if desired.
Voila, the annoying dumprep.exe tool is now disabled!

What do you mean check them, I use Snagit, and I was told you can't stop QTTask..

Are all these removable things? or what...

Yes. You can and should remove them all 🙂

Remove the snag it tool bar too. The less junk you have loaded in IE the less chance you have of it crashing.

you can have nod and avg installed on same pc - just dont have both of them on at the same time

I don't use IE, but I will remove the stuff, I don't need the snagit toolbar for the program to run? I dont use the toolbar, didnt know it had one.

I can find these in the registry right?

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?

Impressed you have kept this alive this long EP! So many sites have come and gone. 🙁

Just did some crude math and I apparently joined almost 18yrs ago, how is that possible???
