.mpg playback problems

Some of the .mpg files that I have downloaded wont playback. In zoom player it says something about not being able to create a correct filter. In media player it says it doesn't support that file type, but others do play, even ones from the same site. Is there a program that can repair these so that they are playable. (Also, I did download the newest divx codec)
