After downloading just right click and rename it to .mp3 if you can already see the file extension. Or leave it as it is if using winamp, as it will still play it. Winamp will still be able to decode it if the original was renamed for whatever reason (i.e. host doesn't want mp3's files users sites for downloading) to another file extension or if the file is even zipped.

Hope that helps

It happens on multiple websites though. It's something to do with my computer, not the internet. its' local, i don't know what it is though.

have you tried downloading the links from someone else's computer to see what they are saved as? djmgyx is right about some sites naming them mp2 to get around automatic host searching for mp3 🙂

I don't know what's going on. It is definitely my computer only. I installed Download Accelerator today, and I am able to use that to download the files as MP3s. I went into my filetypes and deleted the mp2 format hoping that that might do something. Now when i download the files, they aren't recognized, but are still saved as mp2s. i am able to change the file extension through that though. i don't know if it is a problem with internet explorer or what. i might just try reinstalling IE. is there a way to do that. also, for future reference, anyone know how to make it so you can see the file extensions all the time? is that possible in XP. thanks.
