mp3 encoding with windows media player 8

ok, i downloaded the registry crack for the ability to encode mp3s with windows media player 8 off of this site. i added the registry entry, and restarted. i tried to copy music with windows media player 8 and it gave me this message... "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. One or more codecs required to play the file cannot be found." Do I need extra software with this? If anyone has been able to get this to work, please e-mail me and point me in the right direction. thanks.
