If I had just completed a clean install (upgrade) from Win98SE to XP what are some of the most important tweaks I should consider with XP, for example getting rid of MSN Messenger, getting rid of the message balloons, any others?

Thanks
Engineer

Heh, you beat me to it matt :)

That thread is huge but in there is a zip file of all most all of the tweaks. It hasn't been updated (I don't think) recently. *hint* *hint* ;)

it is possible to entirely modify xp and to remove some of its components without problems .
regards

Depends on what you want to remove.

Windows Media Player (post SP1), yes
Windows/MSN Messenger, yes
Internet Explorer (post SP1), yes

Windows Explorer, no

No No the all, you have the option. If you see in the service of xp

what are you talking about?

Yes, I understand that completely, but what does that have to do with your original question? Do you want to know if it is safe to remove something such as WordPad?

On another site the question was: What are the 5 most important performance tweaks for XP? My answer was:

1) Ram - more is better

2) Do a FRESH install of XP & make sure the paging file is properly set

3) Get a broadband connection

4) Leave well enough alone - XP runs just fine out of the box

5) See #4

The only change I might make is to trim your Services as appropriate for your system.

I agree with #4. Although, I must tweak the appearance =)

depending on version of xp, if you have professional, make sure to turn off bandwidth reserve...micro$haft likes to steal bandwidth for no reason. to do this, do this:

start > run > gpedit.msc
computer configuration > administrative templates > network
qos packet scheduler > limit reservable bandwidth.

click on enable and change from 20 to 0. more bandwidth for you. yippee.

it does too, lol...it reserves bandwidth, not that they will ever use it but you only get 80% of your total due to that.

syn, you are missled

qos reserves bandwidth on specific occasions, only,,,like a critical update...

there are very few downloads that will invoke this reservation of bandwidth, and unless it's invoked, you are using 100%of your available bandwidth.

nevertheless, there is no need for it on most users boxes, and you can turn it off through the services, which will help speed the boot

for the all people, think this xp it's very good os but if you install
bad application bad game bad config you have one patatos.

 ummm - yes, okay.... And I'd like the sour cream & chives on the side please

lol. allan, did that make sense to you? =)

oo oo I know that one......Wiggles - Hot Potatoe. Am I right.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
