Can anyone recommend a piece of software that would allow me to capture video from a MiniDV camcorder to a PC and transfer it on to DVD format?

I've tried using Sony's software that's provided with their camcorders but that only allows me to convert to VideoCD and not DVD. I don't want it to be in .mpg since the standalone DVD player does not recognise this format.

hmm, depending on how much you want to pay, i know of a few.
There is Adobe Premiere and Ulead video studio. Those are the two I have tried, but the newest Premiere is great for capture and Ulead is great for the edits and stuff. But both are really $$$.
wow nevermind, ulead is only $100

not sure about adobe but since the other is so cheap, maybe it is as well.

mydvd from sonic
Pinnacle
Adobe Premiere
showbiz

I use them all at work

Also If you buy a sony dvd writer you get nero with it that contains a capturing program thats pretty good, captures in either mpeg-4, avi or mpeg-2 (which is the format you need for dvd's.

pinnacle by far is my fav, used them all, been using it for about 3 years now

using Pinnacle v9 - great for Video CD's and DVD's. Does everything its asked for.

Will pinnacle create all the neccessary files and folders on the DVD disc?
e.g. converting the captured files (i assume .avi format) to .vob files and placed in to the relevant folders just like a normal DVD movie disc.

it will even burn it to dvd if u want, or make an iso, whatever you want

Yup - pinnacle will capture from camcorder, edit movie and burn finished item complete... does what it says on the box.

yes it will do all that, but you need to capture in mpeg-2 to copy it to dvd movie format. You can captute in any format you like, but when you go to copy it to dvd, the program will have to convert it to mpeg-2 before burning it, so it just takes longer, best to do it in the first place. PLUS, i think avi is restricting to only having files upto 5gb's, mpeg-2 has no such restriction i know of, plus its better quality.

OK, thanks for the suggestions...
Tried Pinnacle again and yes, I created the DVD disc which is good news.

thanks again.

not to be an ass or anything, but avi is much better quality than the mpeg2 cuz its the same quality as the camera itself (lossless). and theres no limit, the limit thing you were talking about is 4gb and thats because of fat32 not because of avi, so it applies to any files. if you have ntfs then ur limitless. also its better to let it convert to mpeg2 later because if u do it while u are recording it can cut up a lot as it need to rip from the camera and encode to mpeg2 at the same time (not a good idea)

hey ming what about some rep?;)

Any of the SP crew still out there?
