I thought the only legal way was through Steam after you paid for it.

The only legal ways to get Counter-strike: Source are via a valid Steam account or buying Half-life 2.
For your own good, first time around Valve just banned the accounts, but these people just don't seem to understand the details you are sending Valve that could implicate you, every time you play.
