Re my earlier post "Which repair option", I eventually decided to reinstall XP (not as daunting as I expected) and am now up and running again.

You're welcome. I wish the recovery console option would have worked for you, but a clean install can eliminate soooo many problems - I'm glad you're up and running ok now. Good luck and happy computing. 😉
