master boot record info needed

okay I plan to install linux on a spare drive but am unsure as to how the MBR works in XP

as I want to install lilo boot manager to that the MBR...

should linux not work out of course I won't need the lilo in the MBR anymore and under the 9X code all you need to do was Fdisk the MBR and (x could would still work by rebuilding it..

now is this the same under XP does anyone know.. or wiill the boot files get messed up by doing an Fdisk on it..

better still who knows how to back up the MBR so that I can replace it if all fails..

all help is greatly appreciated folks...

to write a new mbr in XP all you need do is boot from the install cd and in the recovery console just type fixmbr, then fixboot, to write a new mbr and boot sector

Hey EP! All good with me, applying for Microsoft MVP right now, should have done this a while ago.

Notifications don't work, I only found your response by coming back to hunt up some threads, if you want, give me your email address so we can keep in touch easier!

EP, glad to see you come back and tidy up...did want to ask a one day favor, I want to enhance my resume , was hoping you could make me administrator for a day, if so, take me right off since I won't be here to do anything, and don't know the slightest about the board, but it would be nice putting "served administrator osnn", if can do, THANKS

Been running around Quora lately, luv it there!
