who's got it?

I want to install it, but I'd like some imput from someone who's got it.

anyone?

The simple answer is don't install it. When you need mapquest, type it in all by itself and hit CTRL+ENTER.

Most if not all the toolbars out there clutter your system and slow it down. Google's Toolbar invites 4 spywares in with it. Others are worse. I noticed you posted a bunch of well known tweaks, as well as tweaks within IE. Why be counter-productive?

Google's toolbar doesn't come with any spyware.

Guess it depends upon your definition.

Google has a feature in its toolbar called page rank that ranks pages as you visit them. Not surprisingly, it requires the software to send every url you visit to google. That sounds alarming. But so long as you can turn it off and so long as the company makes it clear that it's not saving this information to profile you, it isn't necessarily an insidious thing. Some users want these so-called connected services -- they can be quite cool and useful.

Additional food for thought.

Starting with the 2.0 version, google has an autoupdater included, that you cannot disable. Will download and install latest version, no user prompts, or possible intervention.

Again, depends on your definition of spyware.

so far, no toolbar I use either clutters or slows my computer down

as far as those "well know treaks", well, I am a little defensive about that thread..that thread started when xp was first released, and nobody knew those tweaks back then.

now they're all over the internet, many of those are originals from this forum, now they're all over the internet with no credit to this great board.

we never wanted credit, but I do get a little defensive when some think that thread is filled with well known tweaks.

anyway, the mapquest toolbar would save me tons of time loading pages...if ir didn't use resources, or was spyware

thanx for the advice though...I notice nobody has tried the roolbar, and I won't be the first

as for an auto update without prompts in the google toolbar, that is alarming...I didn't know this.

my sandbox woldn't allow it, but it's alarming never the less

Any addon to any program will slow it down, whether noticeable or not.

Think about Adobe products, when you specifically tell it not to load all the plugins. They initialize real fast.

Cool yo, understood on the 'defensive' bit. I use Google to find tweaks, they come from all kinds of sources. Best so far come from experts exchange, tweakxp, the list goes on. I recognize your bit on 'credit' - but I personally give no credit to anybody if I found it via google. Besides, it won't make you or I rich.

You probably hit up this site occasionally too, but I want to mention it because it's the craziest site I've ever seen regarding messing with Windows:

http://www.jsiinc.com/

The only section on your tweaks I disagreed with is the pagefile section. I just use a static setting. Works fine, never frags. With a gig of RAM, it's never really used anyway, with the exception of some games. If you have some follow up links for me, I'd like to take a look.

that's not true.

I just use a static setting. Works fine, never frags
if your static setting is big enough for your need you're fine, however just for your information, once the pagefile is contiguous, it's not possible for it to become fragmented...this is tue with a static setting or a dynamic setting...no difference what so ever as far as fragmenting the pagefile

that was a myth that was repeated so often everyone just assumed it was true...how the myth was started is explained in the link in my sig

as far as links concerning the pagefile, hit the one in my signature.

oh oh. You got perris going on the pagefile...

(don't worry dealer, you're still my hero...)

Alright Perris, here's the lowdown on Mapquest's Toolbar:
Most versions come with a beautiful Spyware package, and the toolbar itself advertises.

The evidence that fujizzles:

http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threat_display.cfm?name=MapQuest Toolbar
http://xforce.iss.net/xforce/xfdb/14851
http://www.spynet.com/spyware/spyware-MapQuest-Toolbar.aspx
http://www.pestpatrol.com/pestinfo\p\perfectnav.asp

Hope that answers your questions. I stand by my statement. Most if not all toolbars clutter, and slow down your system. Mapquest is bundled with known spyware, and is itself classified as low risk adware.

I'll post my pagefile musings later on today. Got some good stuff for ya. - Shakes

I personally think toolbar apps are annoying, but none of those links, other than Giant AntiSpyware [which is trying to sell itself], actually say it is spyware.

I still say that Google's toolbar is not spyware, but Google desktop does some sneaky things like throw itself in your LSP chain, so I don't trust that.

From the Pest Patrol link:
Note: Mapquest is bundled with this 'PerfectNav'
"
Adware supplied by eUniverse.com. KeenValue/v1 runs at startup, generates popup ads, and is the original version.

KeenValue/Incredifind adds capability, via a second process: really? why r u hiding?

monitors web sites visited, so that ads may be targeted; hmmmm...

hijacks the hosts file and redirects Netscape searches to incredifind.com; oh dear...

hijacks error pages and address bar searches to incredifind.com, which is then

redirected to sirsearch.com; OMG you bastards

Adds an Internet Explorer toolbar providing a search field directed to sirsearch.com.
That's just sneaky.

'PerfectNav is designed to redirect your URL typing errors to PerfectNav's web page'
Again, bastards.

Any application that piggybacks spyware / adware is spyware / adware in my books.
So again, it depends on your definition.

A good example is Messenger Plus. They piggyback it in, but.... they allow you to opt out during install. Software that is sneaky, and installs it in the background.... well let's just say they get under my skin.

I didn't see that it was bundled with PerfectNAV, I have been the lone voice on this forum against MessengerPlus, everyone likes to defend it for some reason. Personally I recommend not to install any useless crap like that to begin with, besides noone should use Internet Explorer anyways.

thanx for the info guys, /won't be installing the mapquest toolbar

I stopped using MsgPlus! once they started with the spyware (wait it's not spyware so says he), whatever it is...
I like google toolbar, with disabled page rank of course but was also unaware of the auto update 'feature'.
I use FireFox primarily now with their version of the google toolbar, anyone know if there's anything 'sneaky' about this version?

Most if not all toolbars clutter, and slow down your system.

screeny of my toolbar...no clutter, very functional

page rank was not enabled by default when I installed this toolbar...the google toolbar has without a doubt, sped me up, not slowed me down in any sense of the phrase

anyway, take a look at my toolbar, tell me if it's cluttered

The toolbar isn't, but the system tray sure is!
Just pulling your leg, perris. :)

tee hee

that's on a slow day at the casino...you should see it when I'm working

No wonder you have a need to tweak your pagefile ;)

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
