Major Xp Issue

Ive been having this problem on and off for months now, with no resolution other than the problem comes and goes without warning.

I start to see a complete slowdown of the system, in terms of movement of the mouse, redrawing of programs when i open them from the task bar (ie a web page that has been maximized after it was minimised, and icq after it is maximized) the only solution that i have found is to reboot almost every 10 minutes and go through the same process.

I cant burn CD's because of buffer underrun errors. i just cant use my computer properly.

i have a duron 800 (not overclocked) 640 meg sd ram, 61 gig 5400prm maxtor hdd with about 20% space left, geforce2 mx 400 32 meg video card. (nothing is overclocked on my system)

I have experimented with my page file, from none to 1024 meg and everything in between. I am at a loss as to the problem and would appreciate any help on offer!

thanks,

J

i should have said - ive already tried that, it didnt appear to be the problem

my Ram is about 5 months old. i havent just added it. i never had problems at first, obviously being on this page i have fiddled around with tweaks and rag hacks, but only once has a reg hack caused an instant problem and i very quickly changed it back to the original.

i defragment about once a month, i have already analysed the hdd and it doesnt need defragmenting.

i have the drive partitioned into two equal halves.

i have attached a process list.

(thanks for your input guys, i'd love to solve this bi@tch of a problem once and for all!)

is it worthwhile buying a 5 gig 7200 rpm or faster drive just for windows?

would i notice a huge performance improvment?

i would be storing the installed programs on the larger slower drive if i did that.

I know what you are on about !!

This has happened to me a few times, Programs crawl up from the taskbar, yet if you open a new one it's ok.

I really don't think it's a hardware issue. I don't know what causes it though. I have noticed that if you stick with it the problem does eventually go away. ( at least it does on mine )

i will try swapping my ram into different slots to see if that has a positive effect.

Unfortunately, its a general slow down. opening up new programs does not fix the problem. the computer is about 2 years old now, however ive only encountered this problem about 3 months into using XP. ie at first is wasnt a problem

Virus Scan.
Disk Clean-Up.
Defrag.
Clean all un-needed files.
Remove some background programs that are not needed.
Eliminate all software side problems.

Still not working...

Change hardware layout.

You siad that you get buffer underruns when you burn... this is a good indication the problem could be with your motherboard drivers.... I have had this kind of problem before. Poor performance and buffer underuns.. I remembered that I had forgot to install my mobo drivers after the last format.... try re-installing them and see what happens

Virus Scan. done
Disk Clean-Up. done
Defrag. done
Clean all un-needed files. considering
Remove some background programs that are not needed. already done that as far as i can tell...
Eliminate all software side problems. will attempt deleting crap

as for motherboard drivers, i hadn't thought of that. but surely that wouldnt be causing an intermittant problem? if the drivers were at fault i would have the problem all the time.

i can burn cds and have a normally operating computer most of the time, its just at random intervals i hvae heaps of problems like at the moment - i cant burn cd's i have an almost unuseable computer

thanks guys.

Definite Memory Problem

When you look at your screen shot it is very obvious that the problem lies somewhere with the memory or the way its being used.
Go here and read through this section: www.3dspotlight.com/tweaks/memory-winxp/
Also I agree with other posts that your could get away with a small or no page file. Also Try and remove all your ram replacing back 1 stick at a time. Also you can go here and download this ram tester to see if your ram has errors: http://download.viahardware.com/WPCREDIT/ctspd092.zip this is not just for via boards. You could also download cacheman http://www.outertech.com/ This enable certain setting to improve memory usage. Hope some of this works for you - good luck PS also go get ad-aware and scan for spyware that stuff can eat up resources like crazy http://download.com.com/3000-2094-10045910.html?legacy=cnet

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
