Major Boot problem

Ok, so here's the story...

So yesterday I tried booting up my desktop (XP Home) which I just installed after a reformat and it started up fine, went to the desktop, and then as soon as it came up, the computer rebooted. "Well that's strange" i said, and simply rebooted. It came up fine again, but then did the same thing. So on the 3rd time, windows came up and stayed up. I then went on doing whatever I had to do.

I then tried to run a defrag using DK7, but said that there were some errors and that I should run chkdsk. So I used chkdsk \F to check it next time i booted. So apparently I had some huge thing wrong so that it gave a new security cert to every single file on C: (30,000 some files...so chkdsk ran for a while).

Now BIOS will load, but then an error comes up 'NTDETECT Failure' (or something of the like) flashes and then the comp reboots. So i can't boot into windows...crap...

So I can get into recovery console, but I have no idea what to do from there. I assume that i have to replace the NTDETECT file, but like i said, no idea how to do it. Any help is MUCH appreciated

I should also add that this installation of XP is on a NEW 80GB maxtor Drive...so can it really be the drive? or is it something else?

Ok, so that will tell me if the HD is messed up...but how do I reboot back into windows??

Maxtor should provide a boot floppy with diagnostics on it. Run that to check out the new drive. Remember 99% of all new product shipped is good. (Let's see 1% of 10 million HD is... a lot).

Try just the old drive in the system to see if anything else got messed up during the install.

It's possible a driver that is critical to some peice of hardware did not get installed and is causing the reboot. You can check this out by booting into windows safe mode and then bringing on the extras one at a time.

If it is a missing driver turn off any extras in the bios (sound, lan, raid, etc) and pull any special add in cards to get the sytsem up and running in windows, then install the drivers per the manufacturers instructions and reinstall anything you pulled or disabled.
