Machine That Won't Stay Clean

I tried Firefox in this environment already, they still found a way to get around it. There is a lot of e-mail opening attachments and everything else going on, Kazaa, etc. Which I know is no fault of Firefox, but it's not an end-all solution.

I'm going to go with IE still, mostly because they are used to it. I don't think it will be an issue if I remove the administrative access. I'm also going to go with McAfee Parental Control software as I have used it in the past and thought it to work very well :)

I may checkout spyware blaster though, looks interesting.

Spyware Blaster is a good app. They update every two weeks or so, unless you pay for it, you have to do it manually.

I second that :smoker:

its not difficult for someone who isn't tech savy to keep it up to date and to enable evil activeX blocking

What's really funny is the assumption the primary culprit is not tech savy.

Any software measure you install she, a boyfriend or stalker on the web will hep her defeat.

A hardware router with password and built in parental control won't even work. 1 gig thumb drives are now on sale for $25-29. Thats a lot of virii that can be plugged into a machine from other people in just one sitting.

Strict parental intervention is the only solution. BTW do the parents know that if their precious daughter downloads songs it can cost then up to $70k per offense and that if she downloads or produces some "kiddie porn" the parents can have their asses thrown in jail. There is a big crack down on the kiddie stuff right now.

Maybe a little stronger education effort on your part would be more effective than trying to work around the inherent insecurity of a windows based PC.

Good luck, you'll need it. BTW, realise you are personally at risk to some extent here. If nailed, the parents can claim you guaranteed their system was protected from illegal downloads. All they need is some receipts that say system cleaned and protection software installed. It's a shame the lawyers are breeding like fleas. It's increasing my paranoia.

Alot of it does have to do with not being "tech savy" as you put it. I explained to her for about 10 minutes today the IMPORTANCE to smart and safe computing. I have a feeling we may have a training session or two down the road ;)

I am confident with my plan of attack, No Admin Rights, Parental Control SW, and a little prayer :p, I will be OK. I am not at risk at all. I have not said anything about "illegal downloads" to the parents in regards to my liability, only that her daughter won't as easily be able to visit pr0n sites.

i haas a copy of X-setup pro at home, the last free version if you would like?

There is a automated install of the most current auto infect sites somewhere, installs the sites to IE blocked sites.

And last but not least, a nice sonicwall firewall, with content restriction.

Hitman pro seems rather interesting, most specifically because it claims to combine heuristics from multiple engines (such as Lavasoft and Webroot). I think I'll have to toss that on a test box first though to see what ramnifications it can bring, if any.

I have started to switch to AVG. While it may not be the best in removing current infections, I have found it does a very good job of keeping new stuff out.

VERY interesting app, I did get to play with it a bit today and liked what I saw of it. I have to see it in progress for a few weeks for a total feel, but I like it. Question though - if you have everything set to block (don't remember exact wording infront of me) - which inturn checks all sites, cookies and such, if an update downloads new cookies/sites, do they get checked by default?

I believe the "Paid" version does so. The freeware version they are by selecting
enable after the downloaded update *see below*:)

Thanks for the screenies, as I mentioned I don't have it here at work, was trying to remember how it was from using at home. So, from the looks of it, even after an auto update, there is some user interaction required to check new additions to their lists. That's a bit unfortunate

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
