Limit on use of bandwith

Hiya, i'm connected to a LAN which is provided with internet access by the nearby college. Now they have decided to put a limit on people's use of bandwith, so I'm looking for a program that enables me to keep track of my bandwith use. It gets more complicated than that though. We're connecting to the internet through a proxy server and it is this traffic i want to monitor. The internal traffic on the LAN isn't included in my bandwith limit, so i'm only interested in monitoring traffic going to and comming from outside the LAN.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm aware of DU meter and it doesnt quite suit my purpose since it can't give separat information on LAN traffic and external traffic.
