Lexmark Z42 problems

Running Athlon 1500+; 256MB RAM. New PC with XP HE 5.1.2600 installed.

I have Lexmark Z42 Printer that was working perfectly under old PC (Win98) using bi-directional cable.

Installed Z42 using downloaded XP driver from Lexmark site v1.0.9.3
I cannot print, and it seems related to bi-directional support.
I just get into a loop of error messages about enabling bi-dir. support.
I do not suspect the cable, as I can reconnect to old PC and everything works as normal.
I have uninstalled printer and re-installed - same problem.
Have checked and re-checked cable connections.
Printer is connected to LPT1 - checked via Device Manager which reports port as 'working correctly'.
There are 2 dialog boxes where I can enable bi-dir. support (kept
screenshots if this will help).
I can select bi-dir. from properties.
I cannot select from Lexmark Control program. I get error message stating
that can't establish bi-dir. communication. I go to enable and it fails,
and goes back through the error loop.

The BIOS settings:
Onboard Parallel Port = 378/IRQ7
Parallel Port Mode = ECP+EPP
EPP Mode Select = EPP 1.7 (should I try 1.9?)
ECP Mode use DMA = 3 (should I try 1?)

Go to your motherboard manufacturer's site and see if they have any bios updates or mainboard drivers that address this issue.

are you using your Lexmark Z41 as a network computer? And is it connected directly to a different local PC? I was having a very similar bi-directional problem with my lexmark z51, used as a network printer. Once I did a fresh install of XP tho, it corrected itself. I think through upgrading to XP, there are some major conflicts in drivers. But what do I know. hehe Just a thought

oops

"are you using your Lexmark Z41 as a network computer? "

Thats supposed to read, "Are you using your Lexmark Z41 as a network printer?"

Z42 problem

Sorry - posted to Networking forum in error! I'm not trying to use as network printer.

Lonman - tried finding BIOS Upgrade - no success. Jetway 830CH Skt A.

Is this your motherboard? http://www.jetway.com.tw/evisn/product/amd/830ch/830ch.htm

I don't think I've ever seen this many bios updates for a board before. Read through all the revision notes and see if your problem is listed... even if it isn't, I suggest getting the newest update. Because there are so many revisions, it's going to change a LOT of stuff... I'm willing to bet it will be almost like putting in a new motherboard = reinstallation to pick everything up correctly.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
