Let's Scrap the Internet and Start Over

NEW YORK — Although it has already taken nearly four decades to get this far in building the Internet, some university researchers, with the federal government's blessing, want to scrap all that and start over.
The idea may seem unthinkable, even absurd, but many believe a "clean slate" approach is the only way to truly address security, mobility and other challenges that have cropped up since UCLA professor Leonard Kleinrock helped supervise the first exchange of meaningless test data between two machines on Sept. 2, 1969.
The Internet "works well in many situations but was designed for completely different assumptions," said Dipankar Raychaudhuri, a Rutgers University professor overseeing three clean-slate projects. "It's sort of a miracle that it continues to work well today."

This, truly makes me sad that the government would even consider such a thing. What do you all think?

Sounds like someone is sulking because they didn't get the bit of the internet they wanted.

It's like clearing a space occupied by a city and trying to build a city there.

Sounds like crazy talk to me. I don't quite get what they're proposing either? Will places like Amazon have to close down for an hour which it all starts again?

I'd hate to think about how many users would need to reboot while the internet is refreshed :D

HELLO??

What are you all complaining about?

If it weren't for Arpanet and the government studies on sending and recieveing information there would BE no internet...

They are talking about making it exponentially faster, safer, easier to navigate, and YES, more regulated... and it NEEDS to be SLIGHTLY regulated... there should be NO WAY a child does a search for Pooh Bear and clicks on a link and ends up on a child pornagraphy site... and I dont even have kids yet...

Lets all be honest, although the internet is amazing, it is as disgusting an invention as any that has ever existed to INCLUDE the atomic bomb... Again, refference my point above... Pooh bear is NOT an idea, its real.. do a google yourself... it has happened... :( poor kid is probably scarred for life...

I see something VERY WRONG... when people open debates like this (and that is exactly what this will become) without expressing their views and/or opinions...

Technochild... you ARE a CHILD... unless you either express your own opinion, and by Opinion, I mean why does it make you sad? ...or ask a MOD to close this.

With all due respect, Mike, I believe a discussion on this topic could prove to be not only quite productive, but will also help us to gain an insight from a different viewpoint.

Although you made some pretty good points in the first few paragraphs of your response, I believe that last bit about flaming me was unnecessary and uncalled for.

The entire world is full of problems, however we cannot simply "scrap" the world and start over, and I believe the internet is no different.

I believe that to gain security, and offer more protection to children and the majority of the internet users, we should use the existing internet as a landscape to building safe, subunits which house the information for different audiences.

Instead of focusing on "what we could do if we started over," we should think of what we could do to fix what we started. The first place to start is with search engines. I realize that Google, and most other search engines have come an extremely long way since the first versions, however I think there could still be more done in the form of indexing certain sites, and putting more advanced filters in place. For one thing, Google, Yahoo, and MSN are used by all audiences, including young children in school computer labs, and should not tolerate any adult material whatsoever. They obviously are not doing their best in controlling this either, 1 in 5 searches will always turn up something that shouldn't be there. With the size of these companies, and the amount of traffic they receive, they could easily pursue this if it would be of any concern to them.

These are just my opinions on the matter, and I did not mean to offend anyone. If you disagree and have another opinion, I would love to hear it. This is the purpose of this thread, to explore other views on the subject.

TechoChild,

It was not my intention to "flame" you. Apologies if you felt that was my intent, I assure you it was not.

Your point about search engines is noted, but that is not the reason they want to scrap the internet in its current existence.

The reason many professionals believe the internet should be totally revamped and the old internet left to gather dust, is because eventually, it would fade away, and the two, If instituted as they currently invision would NOT be able to communicate.

I am all for it and I will go a little further to explain why:

1) IP Space... NO ONE OWNS the internet... that is a FACT!
with that being the case, why shouldn't every single person on the face of the planet have their own IP address?
for that matter why not have everything you own which can have an IP, have its own IP?

Answer: because IPv4 (the old internet) does not have the IP space, simple as that... look up IPv6 and you will see how insane the additional number of IP address space will become if they are ever able to institute it (which they have already started)

HOWEVER, the internet even as far as it has come, still has flaws, some I mentioned earlier.

Examples: Every website by is "supposed" to be able to be identified as what "kind" it is by the extension.

Businesses or FOR PROFIT organizations for example are all "supposed" to be .COM .com = commercial
All NON-profit organizations are supposed to be .org
All educational or universities are supposed to be .edu

the list goes on and on...

There are litterally THOUSANDS which do not meet the criteria which were setup so long ago, so what do we do now?

I feel like many other engineers in the field that the differences between where they wanted to go then and now are to vastly different than to just "change"

They need to establish (through global cooperation) a set of standards enforced world-wide... kind of like copyright are attempted to be enforced today.

I say attempted because there will always be hackers and people who find a way to avoid or break the system, however, if some of these are agreed upon world wide then it will be easier to "encourage" other third wolrd countries to help in matters of the new internet, lest they be left off the node.

Seems extreme doesnt it?

I ask why shouldnt we enforce it?

No one has eve stopped anyone from posting whatever they want on the internet and nothing will be still unless it is just lible or slander; however, I point out that there is no reason that a FOR profit business can have a .org or a Porn site a .edu extension.

I say make it easy for everyone to revamp the equipment and begin the rollout of the new internet.. much as the baseball diamond was built in the field of dreams...

"BUILD IT... AND THEY WILL COME"

just my $.02...

Well first of all its not the choice of lets say the USA to choose what happens to the internet, that being said if they replace it with something safer or lets say a second choice were people can choose to be there if they want , then who cares , to say they want to scrap it well there are way to many things to scrap as per say ... to migrate all that would be a feat in itself, maybe over a number of years they will move things to another level we will see.

You guys all bring up good points, however I feel there is more to the story. The United States government is backing this idea up, The reasons for this aren't clear but I think its pretty safe to say that it most likely has something to do with control and monitoring. The internet is one of the last places we (at least us Americans) have where we can truly exercise our rights, and receive unfiltered information. The US government wants to push the big brother BS onto the internet more than it already is, and the only real way to get that level of control would be to start from the beginning. The US wants to control the net, and as you stated mlakrid the internet belongs to nobody.. so I think nobody should control it.

What's the fuss?

I already scrapped the NET twice and started over. I used Fidonet from 1985 to 1987 then switched to Compuserve from 1987 to 1997 and then went with the WWW from 1997. I'm about due for another major change.

Bring it on!

Each of those changes was a major improvement in content and accessibility.

PS Have no idea what I'm talking about? Google the names and throw in ARPANET also.

Like I said if it is something safer and better I say it again let's go !
