Legally in need of s/n

If you said that they certainly would not give you one. You would need to buy another copy/license.
i thought you could install xp on a 1 main computer + 1 laptop?

/me wonders what Henymans been smoking... cause it aint tobacco :p

just call MS, you might be able to send your cd back and get a new box for a smaller fee than $140, +S&H ... maybe

There is a program called Belarc. It will tell detail about your computer and give you your Windows key.

I agree that it's kind of stupid to have the key on the plastic wrapper. Why not just put it on the booklet that comes with the disk? At least that's easier to find and harder to through away...

basically it's cause us OEM builders are instructed to put the sticker on the pc case, reason it we install off a master cd, for unatended install purpose half the time. every time the pc is booted in the workshop its doing it without a serial, lets us install all the drivers and other crap we put on there. when were done we click the checkbox marked 'final'

the next time the pc is booted at the customers house it asks for the serial. we never unwrap the booklet, thats not down to the supplier, hence the sticker on the outside, and the software comes boxed so the stickers cant go far. :)

you tend to lose the booklet anyway, its hard to lose the puter :p

I'm pretty sure microsoft will handle the issue

first, my numbers have never (3 times) worked off of the cd case.

second, microsoft knows there are issues...they ahve never given me or anyone I know a hard time

just give them a call

also, as already suggested, belarc and aida will tell you your licenses if they have already been entered

both programs are free...aida is imho a much better app

yeah but you have to have a working system and so on to use Aida and belarc, you have to have entered the key already, personally I would go with giving MS a ring

If the copy of Xp was for a machine you were building, why did you open it?

The Computer Gods have shined down upon me on this day!

Called up MS, told them my sad story, and they cut me a break, handed me a new S/N after a little convincing

kind of odd that for all the security measures... a little social hacking can get around all of it lol

and as for why I opened it... I was excited, what do you want?!

Good to hear M$ still have some festive cheer left over for ya :D
Glad UR sorted m8.
I have a spare unactivated XPPro licence key you coulda had,
hence my earlier questions.

But since ya don't need it now.....

Yeah, but if you're prepared to go through that just to get a key, I suppose they will let it slip through. I'm guessing you're not the only one losing the key... But you're right, it sounds a bit too easy. ;)

right off the bat - let me say this - I can understand how this would be deemed "questionable in nature" but I give my word this is legit, stupid, but legit...

bought XP Pro (oem) for new puter Im putting together. Somewhere along the line, the plastic wrap on the disc/manual dissapeared, along with the sticker and the s/n... I searched for hours to find it, and I am still looking. I assume it was trashed, leaving me with a worthless install disc

so i bit the bullet... tried to search for a keygen, and i did find a few, but none gave an OEM serial (apparently different from the normal pro key)

so what in the hell am i supposed to do now? I dont want to shell out another 140 for another os disc, but i seem to be screwed without it

suggestions? PLEASE *sniff*
I'd write it off as a loss and go with an OpenSource OS.

Now there are going to be watching you, and waitng......Waiting for you to mess up.... AND BOOM: SWAT enters your home taking you, your comp, and all the bananas in your home away.

I just two weeks ago ordered update disk sp1 and sp2 for office Xp pro w/frontpage at no cost for shipping or disk I thought that was nice of them.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
