Laptop failed cache memory - open box or wasting time?

Just thought it might be worth my while making a post before I pursue this.

Been gifted a selection of broken laptops, one of the more promising on initial inspection was a Tosh Satellite (500?) which on closer inspection fails memtest reporting it is cache memory that's the fault.

I know that means it needs a replacement CPU.

I may well be opening the box to cannibalise the hard drive anyway, but I just got around to wondering if the CPU is going to be soldered in or if they ever socket them in laptops? It would be neat if I could swap out the CPU as the rest of the machine is superior to the HP omnibooks (though unfortunately they'll be different CPU's).

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
