Laptop booting

I have a compaq laptop, and when i try to boot it the screen says
"compaq" like it always does BUT nothing else happens. I only used it for offline use so i know a virus didn't get put on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated BTW thanks everyone for wishing me a happy birthday 1-2weeks ago

Most systems hang like that because of a hardware problem. From practical experience, Compaq/HP's usually hang like that because of an IDE problem...i.e. bad hard disk. Can you get into the bios? If so, there should be an option to do a dps test on the drive. It will tell you if the drive is shot.

nope, bio's won't even load, just the compaq logo from ROM i guess. The drive was the only thing i could think of also, but can't hear a clicking from it so not sure. I will get some torque screw drivers tomorrow and take it apart and see what might be the problem.
