Hi my ABit motherboard every so often as started getting errors (i think checksum ones?) any way it resets the board and i have to go into the bios to set everything back. This is a huge pain are there any resons this could be happening ??? The board is about 1 1/2 years old and used to be fine till a couple of months ago.

Cheers

try a new CMOS battery and mabey flash to a new BIOS revision.

But surely the battery would not lead to an intermittent fault but would rather just fail plus its only 1 1/2 years old

could be the battery or a contact on the battery or something like that

Sure it does. Think about how a battery works in this application. Ever have a flashlight with near dead batteries. What happens? You flashlight gets dim, turn it off for 30 sec. now turn the flashlight back on, it is bright again and then it will go dim again. Right. Well your PC battery in no different, hence the intermittantcey^sp. And as far as how old the PC is has nothing to do with how old the battery is, or how long that battery sat on a shelf before it was installed. That battery might have sat in storage for 5 years before it was installed.

Your battery is the only thing that keeps your CMOS settings when you turn off your PC, that is it's entire purpose in life. It's ONLY purpose. So if your CMOS setting keep reverting back to default then that battery is not doing it's job, Or there is an application that is running at startup (intermittantly) and reflashing your CMOS. That is very unlikly. I would spend the $3 or less and try replacing the battery before I did anything else. If you replace the battery with a good one and you still have the problem, then look for other possibilities.

But I will bet you, it is that battery.

Welll almost 100% true, as long as the power supply recieves power it will use standby power to keep the cmos settings, the only time when the battery is used is when the computer is actualy unplugged from the wall, the power supply is turned off, or it is plugged into a surge protector that has been turned off

Or just a power drop during an electrical storm. I can tell when my thermostat needs new backup batteries. After a storm the airconditioning system starts going nuts.

Thinking about it a power spike might be enough to trash the cmos ram by itself. Make sure tyou have a surge suppressor on the system. But, it's probably the battery or battery contacts. You can use a (clean) pencil eraser to rub the oxide off the battery contacts.

Well if it was a power spike it would have taken out his PSU before it killed the cmos, or both. 99.9% of the time when the Cmos doesn't save it's settings it is the battery.

I expect it is the battery as after unplugging it yesterday than replugging it, was fine the first boot and second boot cmos cleared. I will try changing the battery sometime this week when I next open my case. It was not a spike i have an expensive BELKIN surge protector and as Maveric169 said more damage would occur (trust me it happened to a mate and wasted most of his system even his cd-drive)!

Cheers for the help one and all will change the battery and let you know.

:)

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
