pretty simple, but needs to be stated clearly these days.
do not open any attachment that comes unsolicited....period.
this includes attachments from friends, attachments from known organizations, government agencies...open nothing that you haven't been told is coming.
viri could have been initiated from your friends email without them knowing it, so a freind's email to you is far from safe...also, no legitimate company or agency is going to be sending out unsolicited attachments given the security concerns our times bring.
even if it's an extension you recognize, like .gif, sometimes these are spoofs that subliminally get past your eye... just delete the email and forget about it.
