It's official PS3 price drop and new model

I think Blu-Ray might win the format wars. HD-DVD just waited too long to jump ahead.

The 80GB model has been in the news for quite a while now. It's not very surprising that there is a price drop. Can't wait til they shrink their console like they did to the ps2. :)

I might be getting a PS3 it looks like .......... I have both the Wii and the Xbox 360 .... I will wait a little longer though ..

The best news is microsoft will have to drop the price, for the first time, on their Xbox.

Heh, looks like they'll never actually make any money from the Xbox division.*

* Except in quarters when a Halo game is released.

You did hear about the new 65nm based "falcon" xbox right?

It costs half as much to produce soooo if they were breaking even or thereabouts on the older boxes now (due to drops in component cost of manufacture), they can easily suplement price drops with the newer process.

Microsoft has or almost has brought even the cost of production on the current gen hardware with the 360 and the die shrink and increase in manufacturing efficiency will only let Microsoft cut the price more.

On the other hand the reports are that microsoft will lose probably 1 billion dollars in warranty extensions.

So it just got a little more competitive.

Planning on getting a ps3 now but what I would like to say is boy would I be pissed if I had just bought a ps3 (not because of the drop but because of the utter denials up until two days ago from sony of the drop) and if I had a 20GB ps3 that was now the same price. Good for those who waited, bad for everyone else.

Good point. I totally forgot about that.

Hasn't this, for the most part, always been the case? For that reason alone, I just don't understand why anyone would rush to buy a new console in the first few months of a launch...or even the first year, at that.

But hey...whatever floats one's boat.

Yeah do you remember the fiasco with the N64 which was dropped within weeks? Hehe.

It has always been the case, but you can choose to not comment or not respond but to deny a price drop almost the day before it happens and lie (i know you can't tell people the price is going to drop before it happens but).

Also the system has only been out for something around 270 days, We've already lost one sku (20GB model), dropped the price of another (after lying within hours of doing it), brought another sku 100 dollars more with as of right now holds nothing but maybe 20GB of space, unless they announce something soon??!?!?!

This price drop and release the past 270 days has been rocky and messy. I'm glad they've lowered the price because I will probably get one within months, but I'm not a fan of blatant deception. It's like the denial of 360 hardware failures. I will still buy one but don't treat consumers like idiots.

... but don't treat consumers like idiots.
Right! because Sony really, really cares about it's consumers:eek:

Hell even the top ten list of consumer affairs bungles is almost all Sony.

DRM, Rootkits, Exploding batteries, TV's that can't be turned off, the PS3, no porn on Blu-ray...the list goes on.

no offense, but anytime you wait on technology the price will eventually drop. The ps3 has been released nearly a year now. You can't really compare it to the "history of gaming consoles" because everything changes dramatically every so often.

Personally, I'm glad the price dropped some ..now "kids" might be more able to afford one.

As far as the blu-ray winning ... i think its too early to tell ... my personal experience is that the HD-DVD is a superior product ... but with less support ...but the only reason for that is the HDCP stuff on blu-ray.

Its been 7 monthes thats not a year ...I aggree that there is no sign's of either Blue Ray or HD DVD taking a huge lead ...

What I'm saying is that I think Sony AND Microsoft and many more companies like to treat consumers like idiots...I wasn't being partial to either side.

also it's a matter of days before saying there are no plans that they will lower the price, they should just not have commented.

Also there is another rumor that the price might drop again.

I don't wait for technology, but it is best to not comment than to lie a day or two before it goes into effect.

It's life to have things cost less than when they come out but these large corporations have 0 respect for us.

I happen to agree with you, it's just hard to find a good side to Sony.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
