Is it safe to compress old files?

Is it safe to compress them using Disk Cleanup. I'm running out of space and it says I can save 1.4 gigs. And if I compress them will all the programs I have run.

I ran it and it said it was going to compress about 1.4 gigs but it only did 400 mbs. So I guess it really wasn't worth it.

That's true but what sucks is I turned on my computer this morning and the resolution was at 800x600 4bit color. Which I have mine always at 1024x768 32bit color. I had to reinstall my video card drivers.

I always seem to have problems the first time I do something.
Everything is fine now, so far.
