iPhone Jailbreak?

I did the jailbreak on my 1st gen iPhone (running the 2.0 firmware) the other day and I'm enjoying the ability to use both AppStore and "3rd party" apps as well. :) When I first did it they hardly had anything ported (from 1.x firmware) but now seems at least several things a day are added to the repository. You can do some pretty crazy things with this phone [since it runs a stripped down OS X (*nix compatible)] you might not have thought about.

Fwiw, AT&T service for me has been fantastic.

Sprint kept giving me all kinds of issues but AT&T, despite the horror stories, have been pretty good.

I just wish Apple would fix their 3G performance :)

Really no compelling apps to jailbreak for ... but since it takes mere minutes ... I don't see why not.

I do love the way you can customize your device with Winterboard. BSD quotes are amusing too.

Yeah I've been told by some people that you can theme it and things. Also it looks like the only tethering option requires you to jailbreak.

Since jailbreaking I've stopped visiting the AppStore I've noticed.

By jailbreaking I've gotten Apps to allow me to move/create/modify/copy/rename files on the filesystem as well as fix permissions. You can also get Apps that will backup all your AppStore Apps as well as "3rd party" Apps that you might have on your phone. I have an App that lets me shoot video (that doesn't look half bad) and that is playable on my phone and on my computer. You can also get Apps that let you modify calls recieved/made as well as MMS. I'm able to read ebooks in several different formats also. Oh, you can also get emulators if your into that sort of thing.

This along with the ability to change the look of every part of the GUI makes jailbreaking really compelling for this geek. :)

I have a jailbroken iphone and touch, so I know what's available on jailbroken devices, but there really is nothing that you really need to jailbreak for. It's nice to have full control of the device, but the only thing I use on a daily basis would probably be BossPrefs and Winterboard. Again, nothing I can't live without.

screenshot?
Vern linked some screens, but Winterboard also lets you change sounds too. So you could for instance, make your phone make "Transformer" noises when you unlock it/lock it (one of the things I've been meaning to get around to - so far I've only changed my dock and wallpaper). :)

Yes, and pretty everything you see on your iPhone can be changed. There are packs to change just one piece or complete system make-overs.

I doubt Apple will let people make changes like that in the near future. They'd first have to make the platform a bit more open.

Didn't see the point in starting a new thread...

JailBroke my iPhone last week, got bored of it soon after and ended up restoring it back to it's former unbroken state. QuickPwn made the whole process wonderfully easy, I just couldn't see there being anything via Cydia or Installer which would make me keep my phone jailbroken.

To those who have jailbroke and kept it that way, what apps are you using which make it worthwhile ?

To name a few:
PDANet Tethering
Winterboard
Categories
Cycorder
Intelliscreen
offline maps
offline youtube (MxTube)
BossPrefs

To add to the list fitz made:
Finder
WifiToggle
ToggleSSH
StumblerPlus
ruBooks
NES (and other emulators)
5 dock icons
Poof

Just off the top of my head. :)

Ok... how about a description about WTF they do!? (Apart from the obvious ones)

That's all well and good gigabot, but it really doesn't address most of the apps we listed. Also, that is a fairly old (1+ year) post and some of those apps don't exist or don't work on the 3G phones.. ie: Summerboard which is now Winterboard on the 3G phones.

Thanks for telling me this fitz, I've removed the link from my post.
Here is another website with videos/screenshots which shows the apps in action. You can take a look at the full list at the main page at http://www.installerapps.com to see other apps in action.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
