i recently brought an external adsl modem..

i have 2 computers
i connected one computer with the modem and im using it now
but i need both the computer to connect to the internet through the same modem,i.e, i want to share my modem! [both computers are networked]
so i just need the settings for the other computer to connect to the internet.

both computers are networked through a cable
Network Adaptor:- Realtek RTL8139/810X Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC

thanx...

win xp

could u provide me the steps how to do it because i dont know anything about networking. i just need the steps how to share the internet connection bcause both have been already been networked.

open control panel, then network connections, in the frame on the left will be highlited text saying, setup a home or small office network, xp holds your hand after that, just make sure at the end to click the option to make a setup floppy for the other pc. ;)

ahh stay away from the networking wizard, usually causes more problems and make things more difficult.

First enable ICS. setup the computer with the modem IP address to be 192.168.1.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.252

Then set the client computers IP address to be 192.168.1.2 subnet 255.255.255.252 with a gateway of 192.168.1.1.

That should be it.

thanx but i have already done these settings
just want to know how to share my adsl modem!

thanx

You need to enable Internet Connection Sharing on the PC which is connected to the modem. To do this, click on Start, Control Panel, Network Connections.

Find the connection that you wish to share (if you have an always-on DSL modem, it would probably be something like Local Area Connection 1). Essentially, choose the connection that DOES NOT have 192.168.X.X as the IP address. From there, right click on that connection and choose Properties. Click on the Advanced tab at the top. Check the box that says, "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection." That's pretty much it. If you need more help, here is the link to the Microsoft Tutorial:

255.255.255.252 sounds a bit narrow. The normal is 255.255.255.0, even if he won't have that many computers. :) Besides isn't this set up automatically by ICS??

Why allow for more in your subnet if you dont need it? 252 gives 2 usable IP's and thats all he needs. I am not sure if ICS sets this up for you, but a 255.255.255.0 /24 subnet has 254 IP's, why would he need that? I always prefer to subnet my networks down if the IPs aren't needed.

To answer your question you need either a second network card in the computer thats plugged into the modem or a router and an ethernet card in the second PC.

2nd network card method.
Run an ethernet cable from the 2nd card in the first PC to the second PC. Set up internet conenction sharing with the wizard.

The multiport router method.
The modem plugs into the router input and the router has 4 (or more) ethernet outputs. Run an ethernet cable to each PC and you'll have internet on both. This will let you install more computers later if you want to. The downside is routers run $20-40.

Warning there are 2 types of ethernet cables staright through and cross over. Depending on what modem and router you have you need to determine what kind of cabels are requried. If in doubt get a kit (router 2 cards and cables).

Because if he invites a friend over he will suddenly have a non-functioning network. That's why. Always allow for future expansion. And why not? It's not like there's any security issues or performance issues or anything.

I'm pretty sure ICS will give you random 192.168.0.0 /24 addresses stright off with no possibility of changing the settings.

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
