It all depends on what you want to use your IM client for. From personal experience, I find that Trillian Pro is really good for just basic instant messaging and file transfer.
For video/voice conversations, MSN/Windows Messenger seems to work the best on broadband. I use it frequently, and it's always realtime video with very few, occasional glitches.
