Hey everybody

I am at Voc right now trying to get an AMD 2600 that I got for free to work. I try to install windows but when it gets to the screen where I have to push enter after it loads all the files at the bottom of the screen it just restarts.

I tried a different vid card, ram, windows cd and it still does the same.

It use to be my buddies that I built for them awhile ago but they wanted a dell since they blamed the computer I built for having problems all the time when it was really my buddy overloading on porn

So what else could I try? I dont have any other slots being used besides the Video card.

Usually its just ram or video when I get this but this time it isn't.

I assume you mean the screen where it will auto reboot after 15 seconds or you can hit enter to reboot manually?

Where does it revert to when it does reboot? Does it go back through trying to install Windows?

No

It happends when your first boot from the cd. The bottom has things its loading. Then the very first screen will come up and say to press enter and all that.

But it restarts before the screen to hit enter comes up.

I think I have got the problem now. I am pretty sure its the vid card cause I finally got a BSOD that said Videoprt.sys. I think my video card is bad and the one from 96 that actually somewhat worked that I finally found at Voc is bad too. So I am thinking about taking my vid card out of my computer and bringing it in tomorrow to Voc and trying it then. If that don't work I am taking the computer home and bringing it to my dad and step moms cause my step mom is the one that tought me alot about computers and she said she can look into it with me and figure if maybe there is something else we can try.

So I will post back tomorrow on what happends.

Thanks K-money

I've seen it do that when using an older DVD player for the install. They weren't compatible for installing windows. The newer DVD's don't have the problem.

Hmmmm...

It is an older player but then again I have always used it to reinstall windows for them cause they always mess it up and then this last time they had enough blaming it on the pc itself and not my buddy downloading porn every 2 mins and not knowing what he is clicking lol

I'll try another drive tomorrow. It has two drives but one doesnt read anything. So I will try a different player if the vid card dont work.

Thanks :)

I think it might be corrupted HD. Have you tried running FDisk to wipe out the drive first or chkdsk to see if there were any errors on the drive?

Alright I just tried the Vid card from home...

restarted again at same spot

Tried different cd drive

restarted again at same spot

Will try a different HD but I have had it unplugged once to see if the error would still come up and it did. So I don't think using a different drive will work but we will see.

Edit: A brand new HD was tested and still did the same thing.

I almost wanna think its the mobo now. I mean honestly what else can it be?

have you tried using a different install cd?

could also be the cmos battery.

Used 3 different versions of windows

I tested one stick of ram so far and the first one had 5100 + errors

Gonna try the other two and see what happends

Edit: On 2nd stick of ram and one error so far. So if there is any errors at all it means its no good right? I never used memtest or anything like that before but I am guessing it means it is bad if there is any errors lol

Edit 2: I just put in brand new ram from a computer that runs prefect and that was built on monday and i got errors right away. So I dont know what to think lol. Maybe the slots are bad?

Anybody have any ideas?

I am gonna go to my dads and step moms this weekend and check it out over there. Only have so much time at Voc to work on it everyday.

How many slots do you have on the motherboard?

Does your motherboard manufacturer have any diagnostics you can run?

If you get errors with known-good memory on all slots, I would call the motherboard maker and try to get an RMA, unless they give you another option.

it really sounds like a bad mobo now.

Check the memory timings maybe relax them some and run memtest86 again.

If you get one stick to run without errors after relaxing the timings see if Windows will install with that one stick only.

There have been numerous reports of errors with only tests 5 and 8 on Athlon systems. Often the memory works in a different system or the vendor insists that it is good. In these cases the memory is not necessarily bad but is not able to operate reliably at Athlon speeds. Sometimes more conservative memory timings on the motherboard will correct these errors. In other cases the only option is to replace the memory with better quality, higher speed memory. Don't buy cheap memory and expect it to work with an Athlon! On occasion test 5/8 errors will occur even with name brand memory and a quality motherboard. These errors are legitimate and should be corrected.

personally i would disasemble the whole system, take out the cmos battery for 2 minutes, then put it back in. Then rebuild, once thats done, go into bios load the default settings and save, reboot and try to reinstall again.

1. It has 3 slots
2. Motherboard is about 2 years old now so can't do a RMA
3. I will try relaxing the timing
4. If the timing thing don't work I will try that but I pretty much did. I took out the battery while we took break today at Voc which is 10 minutes. I have got it to where I have the things I need to run it plugged in.

Will get back with you guys this weekend or sooner. Its really bugging me and I would like to sell it locally if I can get it running.

Another thing you might try is just blowing out the ram slots with canned air, it might help. :p

Relaxing the timings as bush dogg stated might be your ticket, unless the mobo is just bad like you are thinking.

Yeah the mobo is a tad dusty. I used the air compressor in the garage and blew out the dust from a safe distance to not ruin anything. There is some stuck around the slots and other areas.

I will be using all the ideas posted this weekend

I hope the timings will help. Otherwise if its the mobo I am just gonna take the processor and the ram out and what not thats good and maybe later down the road build another pc.

Go into the bios and do two things. Make sure setting for memory are on default (SPD) then disable legacy USB while you run memtest. Sometimes legacy USB will make errors appear.

Which test is showing errors? #5

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
