Hi guys,

I am giving Server 2003 beta a whirl. This is my first try at a server OS. My question is this: What is IIS6, basically. Is it the same as IE6? Is it better than IE6? Thanks in advance. I have noticed that Server is basically the same as XP. I find it faster than Xp.

IIS stands for (I think) Internet Information Server.
Basically it's a web server. Think: "by Microsoft", Think "exploitable" :p

Seriously, it's very powerful, as it can do ASP pages, etc. But requires quite a bit of tweaking (in my experience) to set up decently and secure.

You will find it faster to start with, bearing in mind you have given the server so roles and have not background processes on your system!

IIS guide:

Internet Information Server, much more than just a web server though. Its got HTTP, NNTP and FTP abilities. It is powerful. IIS 5 was a security nightmare but 6 is looking really good.

IE6 is the browser, a client tool. IIS is the server side of the web :)

JohnnyGreb, tweaking to get secure is not so much in 6 thankfully but i agree 5 was a nightmare!

Securing 5 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/tools/chklist/iis5chk.asp

(god bless IIS lockdown)

Tuning 5:

That's good to hear! I'm really not a MS hater.. it's just they have a bad track record when it comes to security...

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
