IE Start-up Association Problem

Checked the board -- can't find anybody with quite this stupid of a problem. :D

Doing some firewall tests, Windows XP Pro and I managed to get all file associations for IE directed to short file names to my firewall exe. I discovered this when kinks would not work in OE. I found MSKB Q177054 and fixed the associations back to "c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe". Links work again but another problems rears its ugly head.

If I try to go to the WinUpdate site by clicking the update icon without IE already running, I get a DCOM error:

Unable to start a DCOM Server: {0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}. The error:
"The system cannot find the file specified. "
Happened while starting this command:
"C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\persfw.exe" -Embedding

As you see, it is trying to start IE from that same link to the firewall exe. How would one fix THIS little problem?

Thanks in advance,
Phil

Nevermind -- I fixed the problem with some black magic in the registry. Can't wait to see what happens when I boot. :D

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
