It totally depends on the footprint and screen size. If I were going to buy an LCD today I would have to go with a decent 19" monitor. Shoot for a monitor with a Native resolution of 1280x1024 and a MINIMUM of 300:1 contrast ratio DO NOT go below that, or I promise you will be kicking yourself in the A$$. I play alot of games so I spent nearly $1000 for a 1600x1200 monitor when that display first became available if you are looking for something that will last and is a great price to boot I would suggest :

This is a very nice 19" monitor for the same price as many 17" models. It comes from LG who is known for having decent monitors at a great price and this one has a reabte to boot. BUt you have to hurry the rebate is only good for 3 more days. So long as you purchase it now you get it for a really nice price $249.00 after the rebate thats less than 1/4 of what I paid for my 19" just over one year ago. amazing.
