Can anyone tell me how to upgrade my CPU? I have a Pentium 4 1.3 Ghz, but I want like a 2.6 Ghz or something like that. Where should I go to buy, and what processors are compatible with my motherboard? If you don't know, can you point me to some kind of resource? Thanks.

You will need a motherboard with a 478 socket. The best prices on any Intel chips are from Googlegear or Newegg (both online retailers).

it would be nice to what motherboard you have. that way we can officially find out the fastest supported process through the manufacturer's website.

but if you don't know, here's some info that will help...

the pentium processor you have now is socket 423, which means it has 423 pins. so, your motherboard would only support socket 423 cpu's. the fastest socket 423 processor is 2.0ghz. anything faster and you'll need a new socket 478 motherboard which might entail new memory, too.

How did you know I had 423 pins?

How did you know I had 423 pins? And where can I look up motherboard info on my computer?

He knew that by your processesor type (intel P4) and the speed (1.4 ghz) and cross referenceing it with what has been produced. (or the simple way, he has one or works with them)

:p nope... just looked it up. they didn't make the 478-pin p4's until 1.4ghz.

the only intel machine i come in contact with is a 500mhz celeron. :D
