Hi all... I bought Dell pc the 2300 before 2 years, and now i have virus init, so i want to format the hd. I have the Windows XP home, and also they(dell) gave me one Cd-Xp cd) so what should i do now? and also do i need to partition the hd or install Xp in drive C: ?
The Pc is Pentium(4), 200 GHz, 256 MB, and it has Windows XP SP1.
Thank you.

everything you need can be done using the windows setup.
make sure the computer boots off the cdrom...adjust the boot priority/sequence in the bios.

boot off the winxp cd, and follow the instructions.
pretty straightforward.

partition, format and then install. easy stuff.
are you using the computer now? or is it off to the side?
keep osnn close by. a lot of guys in here know their stuff.

You will need to put the cd rom in your computer and then restart the computer, when you see the dell logo hit "F12" then a menu will popup and then select your cdrom at the boot option then you will be promted with "Press any key to continue......." this is a no brainer, but push any key(if you can find it) then setup will do its thing after you pick the hard drive(make sure its the right one). After all that is done, download all your drivers from dell and enjoy. I made it sound easy, so if you have any more questions post them :p

partitions i dont like them i use different disks for each partition, but others prefer paritions so dont take my opinion on that, if you wanna upgrade to sp2 you could do that via windows update and for anti virus for windows try AVG Free

I would not use partitions, I never have. I use diff hard drives, one for games apps etc, and one for storing documents. I would recommend doing something like that.

If you download SP2 from MS web page it will take care of all sp1 and sp1a updates. Dont forget to run windows upate after you install. You can even order a copy of SP2 from MS for free.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

As far as a anti virus. If you use one, use AVG Free. it can be found here:http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

Hope this helps you! :D

Well usually these o.e.m. disks are fqactory reset disks.

Save all your warez, porn and music files, burn em to a cd or dvd disk, then check you have everything you need to keep, boot, hit delete check in bios that boot device before hard drive is cd rom/dvd drive etc save settings put in factory restore disk, reboot accept you want to go back to factory settings and then let it do it's thing.

Once you have got into windows drag those files back to were you had them stored and go get yourself the sp2 xp update.

Last thing you want is some virus coming via the net and stealing all your porn, 'innit'. :D

One thing you want to do before you install the OS is to delete the partition re-create it with the disk. Of if you happen to have acronis Partition expert on a rescue disk you can use that.

Most cases, I have found anyhow is that when you just put the disk in to reinstall the OS, it don't delete everything. Basically all it does is over write things leaving some things untouched. Sometimes doing that don't get rid of the virus. Doing it the way I mentioned above will get rid of it.

As a last bit of FYI, when you get it all back. Make a image of the disk, then when you get something like this again. All you have to do is go back to the image. No need to go threw so many steps. It is the fastest way to do it ..

If you want to make a partition on the hd, just make the first partition a certian size and install the os. When you reboot the pc go to disk manager and partition the unallocated space. I am like everyone else here, I use an external hd for my backups and such ..

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
