tell me if i need to upgrade my psu for my future upgrades

regular mobo
2400 amd athlon xp cpu
512 ram DDR pc2100
gf 2 mx
usb 2.0 pci card
wireless opt mouse
regular keyboard
48x cdrw
30gb hd
40gb hd

yep, probably pick up a 450w real cheap when the time comes.

My old 300W powered my old system:

2.0a Ghz P4 Northwood
Abit motherboard
512Mb PC2700 DDR
GeForce 4 MX440SE
1 x 60Gb HD
1 x 120Gb HD
1 x DVD-ROM
1 x CD-RW
1 x Sound Blaster Live! 5.1

And all was well, never had a problem.

Now I have a 550W PSU with my new system (Athlon XP Barton 3000+ etc and all the above, except an MSI K7N2 Delta-L motherboard)

I'm running the system in my sig on a 300W Antec power supply with no stability problems. It has a higher load than your upgrade plans.

The key is if your 300W power supply is a good one or a cheap generic.

Check the label for:
Name of the power supply manufacturer
+5V 25A or higher
+3.3V 16A or higher

Post the manufacturer and ratings and we may be able to give you a clearer answer.

And NEVER pick up a power supply "real cheap". With power supplies you get what you pay for and if the power supply craps out you can loose your entire system. The cheap power supplies can even catch on fire. It's better to get a 350-380W quality supply than a cheap 450W.

Quality names - Enlight, Antec, there are others too.

i have a 300w power supply...and it's running a pretty juicy rig:

Athlon XP 2400+
1 gig PC2700 DDRAM
Geforce4 TI4200 128 MB DDR
4 hard drives
2 optical drives
and a partridge in a pear tree...

and i'm probably on the edge of what 300w can handle :)

cool....im pretty sure its either a enlight or enermax psu, so its all good in the hood!!!

doesn't sound too far out there. check your voltages lately, though?;)

can you check voltages on an intel board? if so can you tell me then.

intel brand board? hmm, good question. and i'd be the last person to go to for that one.

anyone else?

or maybe you can still check them in the bios?

Check in the bios under hardware monitor, advanced features, etc. Or download a copy of sandra from sisoft. There's a shareware version.

And next time the case is open check the 3.3 and 5V current ratings on the power supply. Like I've mentioned in other posts. It's not the total power capacity on the supply anymore it's how much current it can deliver ta 3.3V and +5V. All the other voltages (+/12V, -5V, etc) aren't used much anymore.

15A @ 3.3
22A @ 5V
2A @ 12Vdc (for fans)

should meet the needs of mike09's system and thats less than 200W. If Dell knows exactly what it's going to put in the system it can skimp on the power types it won't need.

where do you test 3.3v?

and 12v is still used for drives (hard & optical).

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
