HP 5300C ScanJet help

Software is installed....I went to the website to get the update. Found it, downloaded it. Now when I try to install the update, I get an error message saying the HP ScanJet patch encountered an error and has to stop. WTF? Anyone with any ideas?

So I too off the USB cable and changed it to parallel. Now my computer recognizes the scanner but the software that came with it...doesn't. The scanner is on, although the light inside is flashing on and off (whether that is normal or not I don't know). So any ideas?
