<REC>*:\CONFIG.MSI</REC>
<REC>*:\CONFIG.SYS</REC>
</Exclude>
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(add the bold line in.)

It is so easy to change with reshacker, and you can make the text as long as you want :p

spinning ????!!!!!!!!!!!!!.. i don't understand half..need to change it to my name IZWAN ..hehe

i cant find this file, C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\filelist.xml

the one needed to do this !

Refreshing peoples heads....

For the resorce hacker and other great free programs you can always get this small zip file containing the free programs...

Gawd how many times have I done this tweak ???

I'm turning into the format master LOL

once again I managed to tweak XP into stupid mode

this time I tried a different approach ; - rather than delete the explorer.exe in the dll cache, I edited it before moving onto C:\windows\explorer.exe

it worked a treat :D

/dont think its gonna help me stop breaking XP :eek:

heh

if its not broke : - tweak it till it breaks :p

:cool:

Tutorial seem to have some typos???

IT seems to me that tutorial has some typos which cause some confusion. Everything is clear until Step 18. First of all, this step makes an impression that explorer.exe needs to be saved as another file RIGHT there in Step 18 and only after that one needs to go to Step 19 and reboot. Another thing is that it seems like explorer.ex2 should in fact be explorer2.exe, which holds tru for Step 24 as well. Let me know if I'm correct. Thanx.

This tutorial is for changing the word 'start' into something else in your start menu.

you are going to have to edit explorer.exe (very important system file) so if you don't understand this, don't try it..

1.)download resource hacker

2.)make a backup copy of C:\windows\explorer.exe (save it as explorer_bak.exe)

3.)open up resource hacker and load C:\windows\explorer.exe

4.)look on the left tree menu for STRING TABLE

13.)save the file as C:\windows\explorer2.exe

14.)edit this xml file - c:\windows\system32\restore\filelist.xml

15.)this file is read only so go into the directory (windows explorer) and make it non-read-only (go into file properties)
edit the first few lines to look like this:

Code:
<PCHealthProtect>
    <VERSION>1.0</VERSION>
    <DEFTYPE>E</DEFTYPE>
    <FILES>
        <Exclude>
            <REC>%windir%\system.ini</REC>
            <REC>%windir%\tasks\desktop.ini</REC>
            <REC>%windir%\win.ini</REC>
            [b]<REC>%windir%\explorer.exe</REC>[/b]
            <REC>*:\AUTOEXEC.BAT</REC>
            <REC>*:\CONFIG.MSI</REC>
            <REC>*:\CONFIG.SYS</REC>
        </Exclude>

(add the bold line in.)

16.)save the file.. this prevents win xp from automatically replacing explorer.exe with a non-reshacked version

17.)go into the folder C:\windows\system32\dllcache (hidden folder) and rename the file explorer.exe to explorer_backup.exe

18.)save your reshacked explorer.exe as explorer.ex2 in c:\windows

19.)click start -> shutdown -> restart

20.)click F8 a million times

21.)select "Logon to windows - safe mode - command prompt"

22.)logon as administrator on win xp logon screen

23.)use "cd .." and "cd windows" to get to C:\windows

24._type in "copy explorer.ex2 explorer.exe"

Enjoy! ;)

darn. couldn't get it to work for me. i'm running xp pro. when i changed the filelist.xml file to "non read-only and tried opening it with resourse hacker, it kept giving me a "This is not a Win32 application" error.

i even opened it in dreamweaver, but it was gobble-da-gok. i was so close! guess i'll have to keep staring at "Start". :confused:

Did you try notepad?

Should work without editing filelist.xml, btw. I never do that.

woow, I havent seen this thread for awhile. Now I wanna hack!!

doh! yoyo, it opens perfectly in notepad. i just assumed that i needed to use resource hacker to edit it.

thnx. :eek:

crap! i betcha it would've worked, but after i completed the guide, it still said "start". i continued reading this thread and found where o_87 stated that it wouldn't work with windowblinds. and guess what i have?

oh well, thanks for a good tutorial. i think i'll go see if i can do it with windowblinds...

/heads for google ;)

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
