What Secular Humanists Believe.

Belief in Deity
Not considered important. Most Humanists are atheists or agnostics.

• Incarnations
Same as above.

• Origin of Universe and Life
The scientific method is most respected as the means for revealing the mysteries of the origins of the universe and life.

• After Death
An afterlife or spiritual existence after death is not recognized.

• Why Evil?
No concept of “evil.” Reasons for wrongdoing are explored through scientific methods, e.g. through study of sociology, psychology, criminology.

• Salvation
No concept of afterlife or spiritual liberation or salvation. Realizing ones personal potential and working for the betterment of humanity through ethical consciousness and social works are considered paramount, but from a naturalistic rather than supernatural standpoint.

• Undeserved Suffering
No spiritual reasons but rather a matter of human vulnerability to misfortune, illness, and victimization.

• Contemporary Issues
The American Humanist Association endorses elective abortion. Other contemporary views include working for equality for homosexuals, gender equality, a secular approach to divorce and remarriage, working to end poverty, promoting peace and nonviolence, and environmental protection.

Personally I think that all of those questions were done wrong or there should have been more questions

to put it simply I am agnostic, without proof I find no reason to put my whole life into things. I also think Karma and doing good things for salvation is a horribly selfish thing...you should do nice things because you want to, not because you will in turn receive something (salvation)

Also besides the fact that I don't really believe in organized religion I think some people need it and some people are better for it, so I don't agree with it for me but some people need it and they should have whatever makes them happy.

so for all the Christians or anyone who would know what I mean
I am a doubting Tuffgong

I love this forum, the only place you'd find a thread on religion in the jokes section. Probably gives an insight into gonaads beliefs :p

I dunno. Is it just me or does "secular humanism" have to be mutually exclusive? In the political realm, I am a strong believer in secular humanism, because I believe that while no philosophy or religion is perfect, it provides the strongest rational and ethical basis for a pluralistic society. Most religions, like it or not, are highly irrational and exclusionary, not to mention that people cannot even agree on what religion is correct. "Might" does not make "right," IMO. But I also cannot deny that I personally believe in God and an afterlife. I just see no need to force or legislate my religious beliefs onto others.

I guess that's another limitation of this quiz.

Read the first post and take the quiz in the link. I think you'll be amused to find out whose beliefs yours line up with. Personally, I wasn't surprised at all by mine.

I posted that link on another forum that I like, and was suprised to get very nasty replies back from several people. They were very offended by the site for some reason! I'm very glad that most members on OSNN are open minded enough to reply to posts like this and not flame eachother in the process!
