How often do your hard drives crash?

I ask this because I've got about 34 gigs of MP3s on one hard drive. I've also got an FTP up occasionally. In the past, I've had both of my hard drives die at one point or another, which has me anal about backing up every piece of data that comes into this thing.

My IBM 37 gig was the first to go, I only had that for about a year.
My Western Digital 43 gig lasted only a bit longer than that. And my Maxtor 5 gigger, which I got in 1998, is still ticking...hah.

You should regularly run chkdsk and defrag, why? well they stop any potential problems and can warn you b4 its too late!

I've never had what you described though, but I have Maxtor D740X 40Gb.

I have had 3 IBM drives just die " click, click , click" AAAAAAAAAAhhhhhh

Probably 150GB in total data loss - as you can only back up so much stuff ....

I hate IBM drives now...

My maxtors have run every day fro 2 years and never had an issue

I still got my crappy maxtor 8gig as a 4th hard drive for backing up "stuff", never had a prblem for like 3 1/2 years

I've stuck with Western Digital for hard drives for the last 4 years and had no touble at all.....

if your hard drive fails, you can go to a data recovery centre to recover all of your data(they can copy it to another hdd for u)...in Toronto, theres a company that does this for free as long as the final price is under something like $100 canadian...they're really nice...

yeah, it's interseting reading all the IBM problems... I have two Maxtors and have NEVER had a problem - I always thought IBM was the best (although the reason I got the Maxtors to begin with is because anandtech.com rated them high like three years ago when I bought my first PC, lol)...

Looks like I'll be sticking with Maxtor after all. :)

I have been running two OEM Western Digital HDs for 2 years with no problems. One is a 30GB OEM Compaq drive (main drive) and the other a 8GB OEM Gateway 2000 (backups) drive.

My old computer had a real problem with drives powering up and down during use. The local shop couldn't even fix the problem. Eventually out of desperation I took the computer to bits.

When I re-built it I had an extra data cable and the machine worked fine ever after!

Moral: check your cabling they don't even have to be loose just a bad wire.

Same story here: Been using Western Digitals for years no problems. I have one that I bought in 95 a whopping 1.2 gigs cost a fortune still running on a machine.

I would strongly reccomend getting Spin Rite @

its a good tool to see whats going on with your hard drive. Takes forever to run the first scan but it will alert you to potential problems. It just got a review in the current Maximum PC. Been using it for a while love it.

Cheers

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
