How much performance gain?

I have an amd xp1600+ cpu and had 2 256 MB memory sticks in it (pc2100). I just bought 1GB of pc 2700 and don't know how to check my performance gain. I have 3 memory slots. Now I have:

1 256 2100
2 512 2700

My board is a MSI kt3 Ultra2. What are the optimpum Bios settings that are safe to change.

There is a program Fuzzy Logic 4 that can change the FSB # and a turbo button to find the fastest FSB setting. Should Iuse that?

a simple way would have been to have test numbers from sisoft sandra's memory bandwidth test to see if you are in line with the averages..

or even a simple test with futuremark's pcmark2002 would do the same... either of them are freely dl'able...

http://www.sisoftware.net/index.html?dir=dload&location=sware_dl_x86&langx=en&a= is the sisoft link... dl the benchmark...

www.futuremark.com will take you to FM's site and you can dl pcmark2002 from there...

try different settings (increase fsb in bios if possible)

and then see if the results are giving you performance increases...

Ooops. Sazar missed the trick question.

Wingman you installed the PC2100 AND the PC2700. You won't see any speed increase. The bios will set your system at the slower speed of your old memory. To see the increased speed you need to run only the new PC2700 ram.

Aside from the benchmark results you will only see a speed increase in some applications. Your bootup should be faster with the extra ram. Memory intensive stuff like converting MP3's, compressing files, etc should run faster too. Game frame rate will be pretty much the same. And in general you'll see less pauses in screen updates since teh programs will be in RAM most of the time now.

BTW Ya gotta love Sisoft Sandra :)

If i read you right, i should only install the 1GB of pc2700 instead of 1 256 of 2100 and 2 512's of 2700. My next purchase if an amd 2600, 2700 or 2800 xp cpu with the 333 FSB to go with my 2700 DDR.

Here is the prices of amd processors that I am looking at:

80175-R
AMD Athlon XP 2700+ 2.167GHz 333FSB Processor Retail ***(Free 2nd Day)***
w/Fan and Heatsink, 3 Years Manufacturer Warranty $132.50

80173-R
AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 2.08GHz 333FSB Processor Retail ***(Free 2nd Day)***
w/Fan and Heatsink, 3 Years Manufacturer Warranty $99.50

as you can see the 2600 is $99.50 US and the 2700 is $132.50
is it worth it to get the 2700?

80177-R
AMD Athlon XP 2800+ 2.08GHz 333FSB Processor Retail ***(Free 2nd Day)***
w/Fan and Heatsink, 3 Years Manufacturer Warranty $173.00

Also, my friend said to stick with the even processor speed, such as 2600, 2800... ect.. He says they OVERCLOCK better. What do you guys think?

huh?

never heard of that before..

you can buy a barton 2500+ and oc it most often times out of the box... stock.. to 3000+ levels... :)

that might be the way to do things...

its also the cheapest of the lot..

just ensure you buy a good heat sink to keep temps low... even with overclock...

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
