How important is CPU speed for games?

You'd never know the difference. Switching to 2.6 gig would never show up either. Unless you are going to increase your speed by 50% there's no point in upgrading. Your next step should be a 64 Bit processor or a dual processor system. Performance increases through higher clock speeds have plateaued due to heat. Intel has cancelled their 4 gig plans.

Get more RAM or faster RAM, a faster hard drive or if you game a faster video card instead.
 
Maybe there's something else you could upgrade like graphics card :)
