O.k I was trying to install Red Hat and it would'nt find my connection - It kept saying "connection to eth0 failed" This is because I had the DHCP tab selected, I had that done because I have a dynamic IP and thought it would work - Well appearently it dosen't,, I have had Linux installed a couple of times before and I had to manual configure it with the IP info.

But anyway - I was wondering how I could configure it with having a dynamic IP ... I know I could configure it with what I have now, but when it changed I'll have to redo it and don't want to do that all the time.

Thanx For The Help

O.k Could it be that no one knows ???? Man and I thought this was a place of pc experts lol !! j/k all ;)

Looks like I'll be calling my ISP and requesting a static ip.

i dont think i understand your problem.
are you on a router, im guessing your ethernet hookup connects you your dsl/cable modem?
i think that you could stand to give some more information on the situation. cause there's something worng if dhcp isnt getting you connected.
do you have dial up?.......

more details.........

I have a Cable modem that runs a dynamic IP - I tried to run it on dhcp and it would'nt connect ,,, I thought there might be some way to set it up where I could make it work.

I know I could set it up to run like a static IP but when the IP changes I would have to set it up again - I don't want to do that.

thats weird....I'd contact your isp for support.

your setup sould be the same as it is in windows concerning eth0. maybe you have set up your domain wrong (you know, given it a name that cant be resolved) and it fails to resolve to anything....thats my $0.02 guess.

Hmmm .. I was thinking it could be that - When I put the info in manually as far as IP, Subnet, Host ip and such it works, But I don't understand why dhcp don't work though, unless I can only use it for a home network, which I don't have .. I did call my isp and they said they don't support Linux, I can run it on there network but they won't support it, they only support mac and windows.

I don't know, I'm at a loss here. Hmmm

when you set up dhcp do you put your isp's gateway address information in as the domain name server? if not that might also be a reason dhcp aint working, cause if it dosent know that then it dosent know who to set up with.

they said they don't support Linux
thats REAL strange...since most of the internet runs on UNIX/Linux. guess they dont want to train cs people on a new os?

Any of the SP crew still out there?
