Hubs are a thing of the past, will it work? YES
HOWEVER, not without performance issues.
A little networking 101:
a Hub and switch are basically the same thing with one MAJOR exception...
A HUB is a "dumb" device... it doesnt care who is "supposed" to recieve what packet, it sends the same information to ALL ports, forcing every computer on the hub to wade through all the information NOT intended for itself...
Basically a load of garbage traffic congests the network slowing performance, ESPECIALLY if you do alot of file transfers from one PC to another...
A SWITCH on the other hand, uses the MAC address of each specific NIC on that node to determine "WHO" (what PC) the packet is meant to goto.
So, in short, its much better to goto eBay or Amazon and buy a 6 or 8 port switch and avoid all the extra traffic on your network..
cheers... hope this helps, and makes sense to you...
