high cpu usage in IE and firefox

I noticed the other day that when I was visiting this one chat website, Buzzen.com, Firefox(v1.5.0.7) had 100% CPU usage while I was in the chat room. I also noticed that it was using a lot of CPU% when loading any website. I tried using IE7 instead and the same problem is happening. I tried going back to IE6, going back to IE7 again, going back to IE6 again, going to Firefox2.0, and disabling and deleting my add-ons/BHOs for IE. Nothing has worked so far. I've read about people having similar 100% cpu issues with either one browser or the other but not with both. I think this may have started happening right after I installed IE7 for the first time, but I don't know for certain.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Clear your histroy and temp files then take a look and see. If I save histroy for a few days in Firefox my CPU usage goes up.

Intersting huh.

I cleared my temp files and history in both IE and Firefox but the problem still exists.

Thank you for the suggestion though.

Might not be a bad idea to create a new local user profile on your PC and see if the problem still occurs.

Also post a HJT (Hijackthis) log please.

I created a new user profile but it didn't help. I also tried closing out all other running programs (AVS, ZA, etc). I ran a full virus scan and spyware scan as well but still no luck. My roommate uses the same chat service/website and she doesn't seem to have any CPU usage problems like I do, so I don't think it's a problem with the chat site I go to.

Well I reinstalled IE7, uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of Java, and one of those two things seem to have fixed my problem, at least for now. I wish I could have identified the specific cause.

Thank you all for your help.

Interesting situation indeed, might have been some weird conflict with the respective versions and the order they were installed. Still quite odd though.

I have the exact same problem with IE and Firefox. I've noticed that many others are experiencing it too. I don't have a solution yet but here are my observations:

It's quite unlikely to be related to any browser settings or program conflict. I say this because I've tried making numerous changes without any effect. I've also used both programs for years without a problem. The issue came up simultaneously for both programs and followed a bout with several nasty spyware infections which appear to have been successfully removed.

I suspect that we are dealing with a spyware infection which has not yet been identified by the major anti spyware companies. I say this because it has all the hallmarks of an infection. I noticed that the problem went away temporarily when I reinstalled Firefox. I also noticed that the problem does not affect other browsers such as Opera, Chrome or Safari.

Problem Solved!

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13 The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement
  • Click Continue The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start(or My Computer) > Control Panel and double-click on Add or Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Click (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE, J2SE, Java(TM) SE or Java(TM) 6) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

  • After the install is complete, go back to your Control Panel(using Classic View) and click the Java icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button.
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
      • Applications and Applets
      • Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window.
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window.
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
    • Delete jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe from your desktop.
