Here is the Dilemma: P4 2.6 or Athlon XP 2600

Well here is the problem, I really need to build a new computer the "thing" I am using now should not even be considered a computer. I would tell you all what it is but you would all die from laughing and therefore I would receive no replies to this topic.

Well I already have the case, monitor, keyboard, drives, etc.

But I have yet to decide on what platform to go with.

I have gone through the benchmarks over and over and they just make me more indecisive.
So What I would like to know is..Which Do you recommend the P4 2.6 or the Athlon 2600+?
I chose these chips because right now they are very similar in price.

Basically I would like to know which chip would be better for what I would like to do...
1. Surf the Net
2.Gaming
3. Cd Burning
4. Music
5. Video Encoding
and other stuff like that...

Which one is better for running multiple programs at the same time?

And if you would recommend the P4 could you also point me in the direction of a good motherboad? there are just too many to go looking through.

If you recommend the AMD you can also recommend a mobo but it is not really needed because there is a much smaller variety and I have already built quite a few AMD systems.

Thanks for any Input

it kicks the a$$ of my P4 1.6

the stock HSF is much better now running @ 32c

Personally I'm gonna wait for the P4 3.06 to come down in price
untill then I buy AMD for home use and gaming

cheap n fast

pentium's more of business chip

very reliable

IMHO

which ati card?

depends which one you want to get...

if its the 9700pro.. it is absoutely worth it.. so long as you don't have a particular sis chipset.. I forget which...c oz they have issues with the ati card with agp 8x... its a chipset problem more so than a gfx card prob..

9700pro online is retailing for around 320 and OEM for around 280... barely above price for a ti4600....

yeah it is 9700pro I'm after

I heard they got the driver probs sorted out now

my local store is selling this

128Mb GigaByte ATI Radeon 9700-Pro II Retail DVI/TV DDR Retail £262.02 about $300

can't wait :D

I haven't had any probs with this card or any radeon I have had...

most of the probs are by nimwits woh think they can upgrade and what not by themselves yet do not have the knowledge to do it properly and then blame everything but themselves :)

the 9700pro did have compatibility probs with an agp8x chipset from sis and that is sis's fault as I said before...

the drivers have been good for me... haven't had a problem so far and I have used them all.. am currently using dx9 and cat 3.0...

if you DO have problems just go to www.rage3d.com forums radeon help section and someone will help you out...

they even have bios flashing to get uber results in 3dmark and stuff.. if thats your cup of tea..

I was refering to the older 8500 cards that had driver problems

I've heard nothing but good reports about the 9700pro

I didnt know about the problem with that particular chipset

cheers sazaar

yah the 8500 were rushed to the market basically with raw drivers... and they were not very stable...

but that was initially.. within a coupla months the card was roaring along...

the problem with the agp8x on certain mobo'sis random lockups and errors and what not... you'll see a whole host of problems posted all over the web about them...

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
