HELP needed with widows update

When I click "Windows update" from the start menu, It loads a browser, then
I select "scan for updates" and off it goes....I get "windows is looking for
available updates, then I get an error message:

Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close ...

"More information" gives this:
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2600.0 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.0 Offset: 0000215c



Any ideas please ?

the best thing to do is

go to start .. run and type sfc

thats the system file checker , hopefully it will repair the problem

Out of frustration... and the fact that it was 3am, and bourbon powered - I decided to use system restore... a couple of progs needed reinstalling, but its fine now (famous last words !!!)

i have a similar problem, i drink whiskey , break my PC , wake up and abuse my computer

then try to remeber exactly what i did to it the night before



yes system restore is quite good for that

Found the culprit !!!
it was the util for setting refresh rates on a Nvidia card !!

Now if only i could set the refresh rates maually .... any ideas ?
