Hello all...

I need a little help from the gurus in here. I know this is off topic but since i spend alot of time on this forum and I value your opinions I thought I would ask here first...

I just built a PC (I have built many), and I am trying to install Windows2000 Advanced Server. The problem is, it wont boot from the CD to install, though it will boot from my XP CD. The problem is not the computer. I have even created the boot floppies from the Win2000 CD and once I get the dos prompt I try to install and I get the error "Installation Halted - Windows stopped installation because there's nowhere to place the batch files" --or something like that.

Am I missing something? How do I get this thing installed? Do I need to run a special file on the CD?

I dont know what to do...
When I run the CD from within windows xp it disables installation functionality.

Any suggestions?

Make sure to fdisk and format your drive from the DOS command line before running winnt.exe

WinXP I think has a newer version of NTFS than Win2k, so you would need to format the hard drive first. Make a small FAT32 partition and work from there.

or, (call me stupid), but is advanced server 2 cds??....im really not sure, but I thought it was...also....why do you own a multi-1000 dollar OS???(u bad h4x0r you)

stupid.. sorry left yourself open........:D
anyway no advanced is one disk, and its prob a trial version Kw, Microsoft gives Advanced Server away like water with any of their mcse books etc...

ntfs changed to version 5 in 2000 but is still 5 in xp i believe, never heard it was different

do you know its a good disk to start with? is the drive on a controller you would need a driver for in 2000 that xp might have built in? does the computer meet the hardware requirements? advanced server is much pickier than xp.

everyone forget what you did to get 98 to load, after 2000( and xp) just run setup and create the first partition during it, it will take care of whatever it need as long as you have a disk it will recognize.

Ok....thanks to everyone for their responses.

Yes, the CD is good. It runs fine in a windows environment.

Yes, the hard disk is good but it does not recognize it unless I boot from a floppy boot disk.

Yes the controller for the HDD on the motherboard is good. I installed XP from the CD to that hard disk and it works fine.

All the hardware is Brand New....Specs Below:

MSI KT-3 Ultra Motherboard
AthlonXP 2000+ CPU
80GB Samsung HDD 7200 RPM
Built-In Sound
RealTek LAN Card
Micron 512MB DDR RAM
32MB NVidia Card

It should all be compliant NO?

Question:
Do you think I should install an older version of windows like 98 and run the CD from there to make it easier to install?

Any suggestions?

Your hardware might not support older Smart Drive protocols. Try this:

Boot to a Windows 98 Boot disk and choose the CD-ROM support. Once it boots up, it's going to tell you the drive letter to the CD-ROM. If your HD has only one partition and the drive is formatted FAT32, it will be your "e:" drive. Make sure your Windows 2000 disk is in your cd rom. Then type in this (replace "x" with your drive letter):

> cd x: (or cd x:\)

> cd i386

> winnt

This should begin your installation.

Ok,

first....thank you all for all your help so far...

REG:
I followed exactly what you said.....which is similar to a WindowsXP install but as soon as i type winnt.exe it goes into the blue setup screen and says the following:

A Setup Error Has Occurred

No Place To Put The SWAP File

Installation Halted.

So I did the following:
1. Re-Formatted Drive C with FDISK
2. Copied all files from CD I386 folder to C:

It is still copying.....i will let you know what happenned....
In the mean time.....anyone have any other ideas before I start pulling my hair out?

dont know how old your machine is but never had that specific problem and ive loaded advaced server some 20-30 times on different computers/setups
welcome to computers, its always a learning experience

Thanks to all for your help....

It seems that after copying the files to the hard drive and running the installation from there it went smoothly.

Thanks alot guys!

Also Hi EP and people. I found this place again while looking through a oooollllllldddd backup. I have filled over 10TB and was looking at my collection of antiques. Any bids on the 500Mhz Win 95 fix?
Any of the SP crew still out there?
